Added a custom Twitter field that has become read only

On the Contact entity I have added a custom Twitter ID field. When I view the Contact form, this field is read only. The field definition on the form is not read only and there are no business rules that can be doing this. Is this related to Social Profiles or something? How do I avoid the field becoming read only by default?
