How to get associated connection role in a dialog?

I'm creating a dialog for a process that includes creating a connection between two contacts or between a contact and an account.  (There are other things being done in this process with some of the same data, which is why it's in a new dialog.)  In my first case of person to person, I have it working so that it creates a connection from the contact that the dialog was invoked for, to a person they select from a lookup, as the role they select.  However, what I haven't been able to get it to fill in is the associated role.  So basically if we look at it from the perspective of the out of the box Connection form, I'm creating the connection with "Connect To" being the contact the user selects in the lookup, and the "As what role" field also taken from their drop down selection - let's say "Parent", as an example.  The "Connected From" is being filled in with the original account the dialog was invoked from, but I can't figure out how to find the associated role - in this example, Child - to be able to fill into that last field.

The only thing I can think of so far is to have a custom workflow activity that runs after Connection create, that looks for a blank in that field and fills it in - I was able to find how to find these associated connections in plugin/workflow code.  (Like this:  https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg509011.aspx)  But I'm not 100% sure this would work, especially since two connections are being made each time, etc...  Is there any way to do this in the GUI/designer instead?
